High-profile companies from Boeing to Microsoft have announced layoffs. Amazon and others are demanding that workers return to the office five days a week.
So is the balance of power shifting to bosses from employees?
Not so fast. As I pointed out on CNBC’s Squawk Box this morning, companies that are mandating full time in the office remain in the minority. Some 80% of companies still offer some version of hybrid work. The reason? It works:
98% of employees want remote options at least some of the time.
Productivity remains steady for hybrid workers, while employee happiness and retention soar, per Stanford University’s Nicholas Bloom.
RTO mandates don’t help financial results, U of Pittsburgh researchers found. Neither share price nor earnings improve - but employee satisfaction plummets.
